Buying budget wireless earbuds can be tough nowadays. Not because they’re hard to find, but because there are now too many to choose from. And one of the brands that stand out is SoundPEATS. We tried their TrueFree 2 model and here’s our hands-on thoughts.

Design and Construction

At first look, the TrueFree 2 looks simple with its small matte black charging case with the SoundPEATS logo embedded on the lid. It opens up like a clamshell and opening it will immediately reveal the left and right earbuds together with four LED battery indicators on the upper middle. Meanwhile, at the back of the case is a USB-C port. I say it’s a practical and straightforward design.

Focusing on the earbuds, we get two compact oval-shaped buds with silicone ear fins to make them snuggly fit in your ears. And they really do fit well in my ears tightly. It’s impossible for them to fall off unless you purposely take them out. Plus, it’s nice that it has an IPX7 sweat and water resistance making them completely ideal for sports or other active activities.

Setup and Features

Setting it up was a real breeze. Once you remove the earbuds from the case, turn on your phone or other device’s Bluetooth, scan for the earbuds, and connect. You can also do the same process even if you’re planning on using only one earbud.

It gets interesting when it comes to controls since the TrueFree 2 has actual buttons on each earbud instead of the common soft-touch buttons. I have mixed feelings about it because this style removes the tendency of making accidental controls, and you can easily lie on a bed wearing it without any worries. However, if I do want to control the volume or pause or accept calls, I’d have to click the buds with pressure, which isn’t ideal since it has a tight fit already. I’d end up removing one earbud and click controls or use my smartphone instead.

As for specific controls, You can play or pause music with a single touch, double-click on the left earbud to decrease volume, and double on the right to increase. Hold the right bud for 1.5 seconds to skip to the next song and hold the left one for 1.5 seconds to return a track. And if you want to trigger the voice assistant on your phone, you can triple press on an earbud.

Sound Quality

With a standard 6mm driver, surprisingly the sound quality is very good. Its got good clarity with clear mids and highs. It also has deep bass that you can appreciate thanks to its snug ear fit.

We didn’t experience much latency with it but do expect some minor delay when playing games or watching videos.

Battery Life

The charging case has a 380mAh capacity, while each earbud carries 43mAh. Charging time is around 2 hours and the earbuds can last you only 4 hours of continuous playback. With up to 3 charges on the charging case, it can last you up to 20 hours.

Conclusion

The SoundPEATS TrueFree 2 has an official price of PHP 2,290 but now retails for PHP 1,890 at Digital Walker, Homeoffice.ph, and Beyond the Box. It’s really affordable yet doesn’t look and sound cheap at all. It’s actually an excellent budget sports earbuds that are ideal for active users or even sports enthusiasts.
